Senior Indoor Success for McGrath
Congratulations to 6th year student Kevin McGrath who won the silver medal in the 800 metres at the Irish Life Health National Senior Indoor Championships which took place at the new Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena on the 19th of February.
While the pace started slow on the opening lap of 4 on the tight 200 metre track, Kevin was able to keep out of the initial bumping by sitting at t
he back of the group. Although he managed to stay out of trouble it also meant he had to come from distance over the closing stages. Using his trademark burst of pace, Kevin did exceptionally well to push into 2nd place with a lap to go but despite threatening to move into the lead in the last 100 metres he couldn’t quite do enough to catch the winner Kieran Kelly.
The top 3 were as follows:
- Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrocks) 1:56.00
- Kevin McGrath (Bohermeen) 1:56.22
- Niall Tuohy (Ferrybank) 1:56.53
Kevin won the Dr. Ronnie Delaney Mile Plaque that both he and his older brother Brian have won for the last 4 years. The plaque was named after Dr. Ronnie Delaney who was Ireland’s first sub 4 minute mile runner and is Ireland’s only track gold medalist at an Olympic Games.
Dr. Ronnie Delaney came into the school to talk to the runners four years ago and we all hope that Kevin will follow in his footsteps to compete in an Olympics in the future.
