2009 (our latest annus horribilis) is now another country and few (if any) will mourn its passing. Economic catastrophes, paycuts, floods, cutbacks, paycuts, homework, unemployment, Thierry Henry, liquidations, paycuts, more homework, redundancies, frost, snow and so on and so on ad nauseam. (Did I mention paycuts?)

So the President (and the men who talk into their sleeves) have been and gone, you’ve had the Swine Flu jab and (hopefully) your last ever Christmas Exams in St. Pat’s are over. Time to put the feet up and write to Santy. Noooooooo!!!!! [long anguished scream]. Any why not?

Imagine, only a week off at Halloween and some of you were already glad to be back (sad, isn’t it) and why was that? Well, the clock has changed (Spring forward, Fall back), the weather has changed and time is moving on (by tomorrow, today will already be yesterday) and of course no one outside school understands the pressures of being a Leaving Cert.

Homework was the LCTP theme for September and there were a few Leaving Cert students (O ye of little faith) who thought that the various homework posters (Homework – Just Do It, Homework – Yes You Can, Homework Is The X Factor and A Vote For Homework Is A Vote For Your Future) were at best a little silly and at worst a complete waste of time – until September 29th that is – the day on which one of the posters featured in an Irish Times article on former European Parliament President Pat Cox’s visit to the school.

After years of wishing and waiting (are we there yet, are we there yet) at last you’ve arrived at your immediate destination, your final year in ‘St. Pat’s’. Every school year contains 167 school days so as of today (September 1st) you have only another 162 school days before classes end and your Leaving Cert exams begin on Wednesday, June 9th, 2010. (so no pressure)
