ATHLETICS IN ST PATS
The school has an active Athletics Club that trains twice to three times weekly (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) during lunchtime. Athletes of all ages and levels are welcome making it a good activity for those wanting to learn or improve their skills to those looking to get fit and meet new friends.
The school has invested in a wide-range of athletics equipment and facilities that cater for an array of disciplines such as cross-country, hurdles, high jump and javelin. This year a new long jump pit and shot putt circle were installed.
The school tries as much as possible to bring all those who participate in the club to cross-country and track and field meets during the academic year.
Cross-Country
After strong performances in the Meath Cross-Country and Drogheda Schools Invitational before Christmas, the schools Minor (U-14) and Junior (U-15) teams competed in the DCU invitational in North Dublin. In races with more than 100 participants both teams fared well but unfortunately did not make the podium. However Brian McGrath had individual success when he won the Junior race finishing strongly to take gold.
In the North Leinster Cross Country Champinships, on the 2nd February the Minor team narrowly missed qualifying for the Leinster Cross Country Championships when they came 4th in the team competition. Individually there was better luck with both Brian Conlon and Ben McEnteggart in the Minor qualifying for Leinster and Brian McGrath and Christopher Traynor doing likewise in the Junior. Despite suffering from a slight injury Brian McGrath managed to come home in second place overall in what were very testing conditions. Minor Team: Brian Conlon, Ben McEnteggart, Kean Crocock, Ryan Griffiths, Craig Lyle. Junior Team: Brian McGrath, Christopher Traynor, Daniel Byrne, Padraig Harkin, Kevin O'Brien.
Track and Field
The school had a very successful end to last year’s Track and Field winning the Minor and Senior (U-19) North Leinster Team competition for the first time. Top individual performances included Barry Kirwan securing a bronze medal in the All-Ireland javelin competition and Brian McGrath setting a new 1,500 record to win the U-14 Leinster title.
